When you live in an apartment, the landlord has a right to come in for inspections and repairs, but only when properly scheduled.
What would you do if your landlord kept coming into your apartment without asking, and then he also asked for your WiFi password?
That is what happened to the woman in this story, so she finally told him no, and he immediately told her that he wouldn’t be renewing her lease.
I think the landlord is breaking the law here, and she should file complaints. Read the entire story for yourself and see if you agree.
AITA for changing the Wi-Fi password after my landlord kept coming into my apartment?
My landlord lives in the same building and has a spare key to my apartment.
Landlords are definitely not allowed to come in without notice unless it is an emergency.
I understand that landlords sometimes need access for repairs or inspections, but lately he’s been coming in way more often than I think is normal. That’s not cool by me, okay.
The first few times, he gave me notice, so I didn’t say anything. Also FYI I am a girl and he is gay, so I didn’t really bother. But recently, he started coming in to “check something” without telling me beforehand.
It is good that she is standing up for herself.
Nothing was missing and he wasn’t doing anything creepy, but I’d come home and notice things had been moved around.
I finally told him that I wasn’t okay with him entering without letting me know first.
This landlord is taking a lot of liberties.
He said I was being dramatic and that it was his property, so he should be able to check on it whenever he wants. Sure, I hate conflict, so I let it go.
A few days later, he asked me for the Wi-Fi password because apparently he needed to “check the router.” I gave it to him.
The nerve of this guy.
Then I noticed my internet was being used at weird hours when I wasn’t home. I changed the password and didn’t give it to him again.
He confronted me about it and said I’m making his job unnecessarily difficult.
Who would want to live somewhere with a landlord like this?
I told him he can contact me if he needs access to the apartment and I’ll arrange a time, but I’m not giving him unrestricted access to my Wi-Fi or letting him come into my home whenever he feels like it. LIKE FR I AM PAYING RENT!!!
He said nobody visits anyways and that I am being entitled and will be cancelling my lease once it ends.
No, she did nothing wrong.
Now I’m wondering if I went too far or I am actually being unreasonable?
AITA?
Absolutely not. This landlord is way out of line, and it is good that she stood up for herself. Depending on the country in which she lives, she might even be able to file formal complaints against him.
Let’s see what the people in the comments have to say about what happened.
This might be what is happening. Scary.
Here is a lawyer’s opinion.
Why is the landlord acting like this?
The landlord’s behavior is very unsettling.

This person says to check the local laws.
The landlord is way out of line, and he needs to be stopped. Contacting an attorney is the obvious thing to do here.
Until it can be sorted, however, she should be very careful.
