His New Upstairs Neighbors Have A Kid Who’s Noisy All Night, But It’s Nothing Compared To The Noise From The Parents

There are a lot of perks when it comes to apartment living. And while cost is one of them – since oftentimes, apartments cost less than a home with multiple storeys – that is not always the case. After all, some apartments – whether because they are considered luxury, or because they’re situated in the middle of a city or other desirable area – can blow the cost of your average house out of the water. But with lots of amenities nearby, provisions like parking, laundry rooms, and more, there’s a lot to love about living even in expensive apartments.

However, regardless of how lovely your own apartment is, and regardless of how well equipped the building is, there is one thing that will directly affect your quality of life in your apartment. And that thing? The neighbours. Because everything can be lovely, but if the unit above, below, or beside yours is home to someone truly inconsiderate – perhaps someone who blasts music at all hours or does intense workouts while you’re trying to sleep on the floor below – you may find your perfect home to be not so perfect after all. And that was certainly the case for the guy in this story, who got new upstairs neighbours recently.

Read on to find out what happened.

Family from hell now feeling “harassed”

I have lived in this apartment for a couple years now. I lived in another building in the same place and had upstairs neighbours before that.

The sound proofing isn’t the best but it’s not the worst either.

I moved to a first level apartment and like five months in, the family from hell move in. They have a child, which I understand is a lot, but keep in mind, this child is five. He’s not a toddler.

He isn’t someone that doesn’t know right or wrong and be actively corrected. No, these parents do not parent their child.

Let’s see what life is like with these neighbours.

Well every day like clockwork throughout the day, the family is running, stomping, slamming doors and cabinets, screaming at each other, etc. And it’s not just throughout the day, it’s at midnight. Almost every day.

Multiple days a week I’m being woken up very abruptly at 2-4 am because their child is screaming bloody murder or is running full sprint from one end to the apartment to the other.

The first time it happened at 4am I just about had it, I go up there and start banging on the door. I’m angry and it’s 4am so I start yelling and cussing (which I did not know they had a child at the time) telling them to shut up or I will call the courtesy officer.

Well this sets the mom off with the door closed saying if I don’t leave she’s going to “******* stab me” and so forth.

Yikes! Let’s see what happened next.

I call 911, the cops don’t do anything because it was a “conditional threat” and wouldn’t even put in a noise complaint. I go to the leasing office the next day and explain everything.

Well here’s where we went wrong, turns out the apartment is very “considerate” of them having a child and giving them way too much slack.

She said they felt bad threatening to kill you, BUT I NEVER HEARD AN APOLOGY FROM THEM! And told me they have a child and he just gets excited. But if it continues to happen to call them or the courtesy officer.

I have been giving them a bit more grace. But a month since this has happened, I have called the officer FIVE TIMES now. I only call when it’s at its worst or they’re fighting and screaming.

And things don’t seem to be getting any better.

Well two days ago it was particularly bad and it kept happening even after the officer came. I did not sleep at all, so while trying to sleep throughout the day, I hear banging so bad my hanging lights start shaking and my dog is mad.

So of course I do the most logical thing and I bang on the ceiling and she gets angry and starts running in place as hard as she can. I left a note that wasn’t rude, passive aggressive, or threatening in the slightest saying we literally can’t sleep, be considerate, etc.

Well lo and behold I get a call from my apartment this morning. They are angry at us because we are “retaliating”. What are we supposed to do??? Calling the courtesy officer doesn’t phase them, calling you guys doesn’t matter. And the worst part is they say that they are feeling harassed now by us by just living in their apartment.

IF YOU HAVE A CHILD THAT IS RUNNING IN A FULL SPRINT 24/7 AND YOU GUYS CANT SEEM TO STOP FIGHTING OR SLAMMING SHUT EVERY DAMN DOOR IN YOUR APARTMENT, MOVE TO THE FIRST FLOOR OR DON’T LIVE IN AN APARTMENT.

And he’s still feeling very unsupported by the apartment company.

She said that if it continues they’ll tell them they need to move to the first floor. It’s been happening for months now, this has been an empty threat they’ve been saying forever now.

So now I have no idea what the hell to do. If they are feeling harassed by the ONE time I banged on the ceiling. Or by the countless times I have called the courtesy officer, but seems to forget as well as the apartment she literally threatened to kill me???

The apartment keeps telling me to call the officer. But god that’s not stopping them.

My lease is up in May and all I can hope is that they move to the first floor soon or we can get out of this lease. Because I can’t put up with this **** for another three months.

Yikes, what a truly horrible situation to be in.

Sure, be supportive of the family with kids – but that doesn’t mean you can let them get away with anything.

And when the folk below literally can’t sleep at night because of their noise, you have a real problem on your hands.

Let’s see what the Reddit community made of this.

This person thought they were right to keep complaining.

While others thought they should record the disturbances.

This sounds like a really horrible family to live underneath. There is no reason for screaming and shouting into the night, and as for letting the kid run up and down at 4am? That really suggests that the kid isn’t getting the parenting he needs. But given their blatant disregard for everyone around them, that’s not surprising, since the parents don’t seem to care at all about waking up their kid with their yelling, nor do they care about the serious psychological effects living in such an unstable environment will be having on their child.

But none of that is this neighbour’s problem. Rather, he just needs to focus on trying to sleep at night, and all the while this family are making a racket overhead, that’s not going to happen. And sure, he could invest in noice cancelling earplugs, but that’s beside the point. The landlords should be trying to act upon these frequent complaints, rather than just giving empty threats and then sticking by the family with a kid. It’s no wonder he wants to move out.
