Nobody expects choosing a baby name to spark a family feud.
One new mom picked a common name for her newborn son, only to discover it overlapped with a distant cousin’s name.
She wasn’t especially close with this relative, but her husband’s family still kept in touch with the cousin’s parents.
What she didn’t anticipate was her husband’s uncle taking the name choice deeply personally, expressing genuine anger and even worrying it might discourage his own son from wanting children someday.
Now she’s caught between standing by a decision she still believes in and feeling guilty for upsetting someone the family genuinely cares about.

AITA for naming my son the same name as a cousin I’m not close to
My son was born last week. I gave him a decently common name. Let’s call him James (not his real name) to protect identity.
Her son isn’t the only person in the family with this name.
I also have a cousin named the same name as my son, who is a little older than me.
I have no relationship with him. No tension or anything, I have tried to reach out to him in the past, and he’s had no interest in keeping in touch.
However, she is close with other people in his circle.
I’m decently close with his parents, my aunt and uncle. My dad is brothers with the uncle, and they are best mates. I had some reservations about choosing the name, but my wife liked it, so did I, so I went with it.
Her choosing the same name has soon created some uncomfortable tension.
It’s now my understanding that my uncle (via my dad) is very disappointed that I chose the name and that he “owns” the name. Not sure if those were his exact words, but he is actually ticked off.
Uncle is also concerned it may impede his son from wanting kids of his own.
This all caught this new mom by surprise.
I honestly didn’t think my uncle would care that much at all. However, now knowing that I’ve upset my uncle, I feel bad. We have a good relationship, and I didn’t want to screw it up.
I didn’t realize he felt that attached to the name. My son and his son are almost 40 years apart and are very unlikely to have a relationship.
AITA?
What a ridiculous thing to be upset about.
Redditors chime in with their thoughts.
A name is a name, and it’s free game.
This commenter scoffs at the whole notion.
Some families intentionally choose the same names.

It’s a total non-issue for this user.
Reacting to a shared baby name like it’s a personal betrayal says a lot more about the uncle than about anything she actually did.
It’s very common for families to pick from the same pool of popular options for names.
Suggesting it might somehow discourage his own son from wanting kids someday is a wild leap with zero real connection to reality.
Choosing a name for your own baby should never require outside approval from extended relatives.
