Housesitting seems like a straightforward job, but lots of things can go wrong and that’s what happened in this story.

Check out the bizarre reason this house sitter does not have any allies.

AITA for cleaning the cutlery drawers while “house sitting” for someone?

My partner and I are staying over at their friend’s house while they’re out of the country for work. They graciously let us spend a week of our summer holidays at their house.

I have very severe (anaphylactic) food allergies. I have to carry two Epipens because of this and have since I was a child.

This is evoking my worst fears about my niece and nephew’s allergies.

My mom kissed me on the cheeks when I was an infant, after eating PB, I had such a bad reaction that they had to call an ambulance.

My partner is aware of this. I think the friend knows I have allergies, but they never met me before and don’t really know much besides that.

When we got into the house, I noticed that some foods I was allergic to (nuts and PB), were on the shelves in the kitchen.

So I don’t blame her at all for this other thing she did to keep safe.

When I went to grab cutlery for dinner, I noticed crumbs and food stuff in the cutlery drawer. Nothing crazy gross but like, it wasn’t cleaned recently or anything.

Just to be safe, I ran this cutlery in the dishwasher again and started to clean out the drawer.

My partner caught me doing this and got really, really mad at me, saying that I thought their friend was filthy and gross.

I tried to reassure that wasn’t what I thought at all.

It makes me mad when I see people gaslit. I would tell her to ditch them all.

I was just doing it out of safety, since there are food debris in with the cutlery and they clearly have food products in the house that would send me to the hospital (or worse) if I ingest them.

They said I was overreacting and refuse to apologize for getting angry at me. I ended up cleaning the cutlery discretely by hand when my partner wasn’t looking.

Was I really that bad? In my eyes I just wanted to make sure the cutlery and the thing it sits in didn’t have food debris, nut oils, etc. that I know would “at best” make me sick, likely worse.

Here is what people are talking about.

Same! What a weird thing to be angry about.

It’s more than wild. It’s profoundly concerning. A giant red flag.

That is a good way to make sure you’re respectful about it.

Oh, same. Crumbs are unavoidable.

Indeed. She needs to leave him.
