If you are wondering whether these beach-combing objects are robots, boats, aircraft, recycled trash, or some combination of each, you’re not alone. Welcome to the 2021 “Strandbeest Evolution” by Theo Jansen.
Originally, the Strandbeesten were a statement about global warming and rising sea levels. But four decades later, they have evolved with the changing environment. Some can store wind power, navigate changing tides, and sense weather patterns.
For more, check out the Strandbeest website and watch Theo Jansen himself explain his art at a 2011 TED Conference in his hometown of Delft.
