Chas Pope is a British expat living in China. On January 2nd, 2017 he took the unbelievable timelapse above that shows smog rolling into Beijing and engulfing the city.
The 12-second clip above is the condensed version of a mere 20 minutes elapsed. According to Pope, the Air Quality Index (AQI) was over 400. For reference, an AQI above 100 is considered unhealthy.
