If You Spin a CD Fast Enough it Will Explode. Here’s What That Looks Like at 170,000 FPS

 

The critical ‘spin rate’ for a CD is 23,000 RPM. Anything more and the CD will shatter and explode into hundreds of pieces. The Slow Mo Guys decided to film this phenomenon with a Phantom v2511, which—at its lowest resolution—is capable of filming at an incomprehensible 1 million frames per second (FPS).

For this experiment, the Slow Mo Guys filmed at 170,000 FPS. That means 4 seconds of real-time video would take about 7.5 hours to view…
