14-Year-Old Lucas Etter set the world record for fastest Rubik’s cube solve with a time of 4.90 seconds. He beat the previous world record by 0.35 seconds, becoming the first person to ever solve a Rubik’s cube in under five seconds, an accomplishment akin to the first sub 4-minute mile (for ‘speed cubers’).
According to FiveThirtyEight, ‘cubes are randomly scrambled according to a computer program, and a solver has 15 seconds to inspect a cube before racing to spin it back to its organized state.’
