Mr. Bean’s Rowan Atkinson Reveals Some Behind-The-Scenes Secrets

YouTube video player

Actors Rowan Atkinson and Robin Driscoll, and writer Richard Curtis reminisce about filming Mr. Bean, an award-winning British sitcom that ran from 1990 to 1995. The show’s ninth episode, “Do-It-Yourself Mr. Bean,” was particularly memorable, especially the scene that features (Atkinson) buying so many post-holiday home items that he has to sit in an armchair strapped to the roof of his Mini as it crashes into a mattress truck.

The show, with its many wide-screen shots and minimal dialogue, was the perfect vehicle to showcase Atkinson’s non-verbal and one-liner comedic style, as well as his exceptional improvisational skills. Watching Mr. Bean and his increasingly embarrassing antics is almost like seeing the slapstick Michael Scott from The Office, only 15 years before his time.
