A Rubens’ tube (also known as a standing wave flame tube or flame tube) is a physics apparatus for demonstrating acoustic standing waves. Invented by German physicist Heinrich Rubens in 1905, it graphically shows the relationship between sound waves and sound pressure.
Sune Nielsen and the team at Aarhus decided to take the Rubens’ tube to the next level with the ‘Pyro Board’, a two-dimensional ‘plane’ of Rubens’ tubes that features 2500 individual gas flames. Watch what happens when they pump some music into the board, for science of course 🙂
