This Mashup Shows Why Sam Smith Is Paying Tom Petty Royalties for Stay With Me

by twistedsifter

This past weekend Sam Smith’s rep confirmed that Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne have now been co-credited as writers for Smith’s Grammy-nominated hit “Stay With Me” after ‘undeniable similarities’ were acknowledged between Petty’s 1989 hit, “I Won’t Back Down”. Smith’s rep maintains the similarities are a ‘complete coincidence’.

A recent YouTube mashup shows the similarities between the two choruses but it’s important to note that the Tom Petty song was slightly rearranged to go along with the Sam Smith song and that there are actually pieces missing from the Petty song and they do not naturally line up like this. However, aside from the tempo and pitch, no alterations have been made to what you hear.
