If you’re wondering why anyone would take a 15-minute flight between remote farming villages in South Sudan, you’re not alone. The United Nations has its own airline, despite only operating in 23 countries with 75 aircraft, and it includes such bizarre routes.
The United Nations Humanitarian Air Service (UNHAS), managed by the World Food Programme, is the only airline dedicated to flying where no one else will fly. It all started in the 1970s when the Sahel, an African region between the Sahara Desert and tropical savannas, experienced a severe drought and famine.
