Tigers Can’t Purr, So When They’re Happy They ‘Chuff’ Instead

So apparently tigers can’t purr, so when they’re happy they ‘chuff’ or chuffle instead. Also known as ‘prusten’, according to Wikipedia, it’s a type of vocalization made only by two members of the Panthera family, the tiger and snow leopard.

In order to ‘chuff’ the animal closes its mouth and blows through its nostrils, producing a hearty snort sound.
