In the early 2000s, and especially with the introduction of smartphones, 3D logos were all the rage. But have you ever noticed that commonly-seen images like Google, Instagram, and Netflix have all gone 2D? Why did we go flat so fast?
As we all know, technology moves fast, but it also follows trends. Early advertising used simple, flat, and easy-to-read words and symbols. Computers brought CGI (Computer Generated Imagery) and suddenly logos came to life. Graphic tools like Adobe InDesign and Photoshop started using skeuomorphism – making images on the internet look like real-life objects. For example, we haven’t used floppy disks in years, but you probably click on a picture of one to “save.”
Watch the video for why skeuomorphism became less important and how the design world went back to flat, literally overnight.
