You Can’t Un-Hear This Hidden Voice in The Last Beatles Song

YouTube video player

Did you know there is a hidden voice in The Beatles song, “I Want You (She’s so Heavy)” from the famous Abbey Road album?

Many have speculated about who is talking in the background and why – especially given the album’s significance. It was the last time all four members recorded together, as a band, in their original Abbey Road studio. If you listen carefully, around the 4:22 mark in “I Want You,” you can hear a “ghost vocal” right after John’s long yell. Originally, it was thought to be someone in the control room telling John that he was too loud. But no one would admonish John Lennon, and like most mysteries, the truth is a bit more complicated.

Produced over an 8-month period, recorded at least 5 different ways with more than 35 takes, including a marathon all-nighter session with producer George Martin, the resulting song was a layered masterpiece. It showcases the unique talent of each Beatle as well as various instruments and vocal harmonies. A ghost vocal is a small price to pay when you listen to this one-of-a-kind gem.
