Industry and Architecture in Mid 20th Century America

Ezra Stoller (1915-2004) is known as one of the most influential photographers of Modern architecture. Stoller was born in Chicago, grew up in New York and graduated from NYU in 1938 with a BFA in industrial design. During his prosperous career as an architectural photographer, Stoller worked closely with many of the period’s leading architects, including: Frank Lloyd Wright, Paul Rudolph, Marcel Breuer, I.M. Pei, Gordon Bunshaft, Eero Saarinen, Richard Meier and Mies van der Rohe, among others. Many modern buildings are known and remembered by the images Stoller created.

The first time the American Institute of Architects awarded a medal for architectural photography, in 1960, it was given to Ezra Stoller. Of Stoller’s work, architecture critic Paul Goldberger once noted, “…his work has made him perhaps the most celebrated architectural photographer of the 20th Century; his pictures…have in and of themselves played a major role in shaping the public’s perception of what modern architecture is about.” [Source]

Stoller’s work can be seen in the collections of numerous museums and his photographs have been exhibited around the world. His most recent exhibition, Beyond Architecture, just completed earlier this month at the Yossi Milo Gallery in New York. His latest book, Ezra Stoller, Photographer, published by Yale University Press, was released in December 2012 and features 288 pages of stunning photography.
