The Genus Of Spiders Known As Poltys Have Some Of The Most Remarkable Camouflage In The Animal Kingdom, Blending In With Their Surroundings Almost Perfectly

The animal kingdom is filled with various traits that help individual animals to survive. Some animals evolve to be massive and fearsome, others evolve to be highly venomous, both of which can help deter predators and subdue prey.

Then there is a class of animals that relies on going unseen entirely for their survival, and that is where the genus Poltys finds itself. This is a family of spiders that has evolved to blend in with their surroundings almost perfectly.

What makes these spiders especially cool is that the different members of the species have often specialized to look exactly like a different area of their surroundings.

There are dozens of different species of these spiders, and researchers continue to discover more (when they can find them.

One example is the Poltys idae, which is commonly called the Dead Leaf Spider. If you ever see one, you will know where it gets its name. It is native to Asia and when it is resting (usually during the day) its body has a blend of green and brown that make it look exactly like a dead leaf on one of the trees that it calls home.

It is so detailed that even trained scientists often have trouble finding them. The spider’s body has parts that mimic the stalk of a leaf, the leaf veins, and even the texture of a dying leaf almost perfectly.

These types of spiders are generally found in Africa, Asia, and of course, Australia. They are orb weaver spiders that create beautiful webs where they capture and eat their prey at night. During the day, they will generally find a place to sit still and blend in with the surroundings.

These spiders evolved to mimic their surroundings almost perfectly over the course of thousands, or even millions, of generations. Tiny changes in their appearance could have a notable impact on their ability to survive and pass on those traits.

While it takes thousands of years to do, evolving to have this type of camouflage is a very effective way for a species to survive.
