Four years of friendly neighbor small talk fell apart in a single innocent sentence, and one woman never even said the words responsible for it.

She and her husband had always gotten along well with the neighbor behind them, right up until a nearby lot was subdivided and sold, with new construction now planned directly behind both their properties, an unwelcome change neither family was thrilled about.

While her husband chatted with the neighbor last week, her 9 year old daughter chimed in, claiming her mom was celebrating that the new house would sit behind his yard instead of theirs, a comment she never actually made.

Now she’s stuck deciding whether to address a misunderstanding she never created, torn between wanting to clear the air and dreading how awkward that conversation would inevitably be.

Neighbor hates me now

We have lived in our house for 4 years. Always gotten along well with our neighbor. He’s a great neighbor to have.

Unfortunately the neighbor behind us subdivided and sold his home, and they are now building a house behind both of our properties.

This decision has caused discontent across the neighborhood.

No one’s thrilled about it, we back up to woods and there is a pipeline (so no building), and it was one of the things we loved.

Fast forward to last week when my husband is talking to him and my 9 year old daughter.

When the new house came up, my daughter said, “Oh yes, my mommy is celebrating it won’t be behind our house but behind yours.”

My husband was speechless and did not defend the situation.'”

She’s quick to defend herself against this gross misrepresentation.

First off, this never even happened! I never said this! They haven’t even started building!

I am sure I’ve said something like “I hope it’s not directly behind us,” but have never once been celebrating its location for either of us.

My husband said my neighbor turned bright red and was very obviously angry.

Now things are extremely awkward between them.

He won’t even look at us since then.

We used to see him a couple times a week walking his dog and stop and chat, always wave, stop when pulling in to say hi.

I feel terrible about the entire situation. He probably thinks I’m a huge jerk, and now I feel so uncomfortable.

I feel like I need to say something (super annoyed my husband didn’t say something in the moment), but also feel so uncomfortable bringing it up!

This all took an unfortunate turn.

It’s best to try and sort this conflict out as soon as possible.

Surely the neighbor understands that kids sometimes do things like this.

The husband is also partly to blame for not standing up for his wife.
