Imagine waiting for the school bus with your daughter when a van rushes around the corner and almost runs her over. What would you expect the driver to do in response? How would you react?
In this story, one mom is in this situation, and she wishes the driver had reacted differently in the moment. She also has a message to everyone in the neighborhood.
She shared her thoughts in a post on her neighborhood Facebook page, but the post was removed. Now, she’s wondering if she never should’ve posted it.
Keep reading to see what she wrote.
AITA for posting this on my neighborhood Facebook page
I posted this on our small cul-de-sac Facebook page yesterday after my daughter was almost hit by a minivan at the school bus stop.
The van seemed to come out of nowhere and I didn’t know who they were, but obviously a neighbor, because they had a chat with the only other adult witness after this happened.
She wishes the driver had checked on her child.
I’ll paste the entirety of the post here.
I didn’t call the person out by name, but I did shame them for not checking on my kid and instead having a chat with the other parent.
My post got removed after a few hours.
Here’s what she wrote on the Facebook page.
THE POST:
This morning, my daughter was almost hit by a car on the corner of C and B as the school bus was pulling up to a stop.
She walked to a car parked at the stop sign, to give a glow stick to a friend who was in the car, when a van came around the corner, down from C ct.
My daughter panicked and ran back across the street and almost got hit.
Neither of us saw the van until it was right there.
She urges drivers to be cautious.
She has been very good at looking both ways when crossing the street, but she was already in the road when the van came and she reacted.
Please remember to drive carefully through the neighborhood, especially during school bus pick up and drop off times.
Kids play ball in the street while waiting for the bus all the time.
She has another request.
If you see a bus pulling up, please stop even if the bus isn’t fully stopped yet, a stopping bus means potential kids in the street, or at least slow way down, instead of trying to beat the bus.
You wouldn’t drive next to a stopping bus, right?
Why would you think it’s ok to turn in front of one?
Then, she wrote a message directly to the driver.
And to the driver who almost hit a child in the road, I’m sure you were scared too, but you showed no concern to the child you could have killed, nor to the mother who frantically tried to console a terrified kid.
Instead, you sat in the middle of the road, having a friendly chat with a parent in the car my kid stood next to just seconds before, until the bus loaded up and left.
You clearly weren’t in any kind of rush to get to your house and could have waited for the bus to stop and pick up kids before turning onto B.
Was she overreacting by posting this on a neighborhood page, or was it the right thing to do? Let’s see what Reddit has to say.
This person agrees that drivers need to pay more attention.
Another person suggests posting a shorter version.
Someone who runs a Facebook group weighs in.
If you enjoyed this story, check out this post about a couple who is sick and tired of their neighbor’s kids dumping trash on their patio.
But this person has a question for the mom.
I don’t think there was anything wrong with what she wrote, but it may have gotten declined for calling out the one particular driver. I agree with the comment about trying to post a shorter version asking drivers to pay more attention and slow down.
That said, it sounds like OP was there when it happened. Why did she let her daughter walk in the street? If her daughter hadn’t been in the street in the first place, there wouldn’t be an issue here.
The driver wasn’t the only adult who messed up.
