Not music to my ears.

“This came out of nowhere, and I am so confused.

The house behind us sold about 18 months ago but people only moved in recently. I had been meaning to introduce myself with a ‘Welcome to the Neighborhood basket’ but just kept forgetting baking ingredients or getting busy with work, etc.

So it was pretty uncomfortable that the first time I rang their doorbell was with a noise complaint.

I am able to work from home sometimes, and my husband is 100% remote. Our neighborhood is typically very quiet during the day (night too) as most people commute and others like my husband work from home.

Hmmmm…

About two weeks ago, my husband said he had a rough day because the new neighbors were playing music loudly. He didn’t want to be the guy to make a big deal out of it so he said nothing.

It happened a few days later, and he couldn’t deal with thumping bass during important calls so he went to the neighbor’s house to ask them to turn it down. No one answered. He tried repeatedly during the day but never got an answer even though the music continued.

The same thing happened again a few days after that. Music made it hard to concentrate, he rang the bell, no one answered, music continued. Three days he tried, three days failed.

Here we go again…

I was home yesterday working on a tight deadline when at about 10:30 am the music started. I put on headphones but was still bothered. I tried to ignore it but could not.

I finally gave up and walked over fully expecting to have the same experience my husband did with no one answering. Much to my surprise, the door opened very quickly after I rang.

I tried to introduce myself but the music was too loud for my new neighbor to hear me. He signaled for me to hold on and disappeared back into the house.

The music stopped and he returned. I introduced myself, apologizing for not welcoming him when they moved in, and explained that the music was making it hard for us to work.

This guy sounds like a jerk.

He said he also works from home and needs his “background” music. I asked if he could just keep the volume lower. He gave me a little huff but said sure and went back inside.

I’d barely gotten back to my desk before the music started again – louder than before. I was too irritated and worried about my deadline to try to reason with him and my husband wasn’t home to help out so I left and worked at the library for the rest of the day.

Who would say something like this…?

He stopped me while I was walking the dog this morning and said that I “didn’t need to be such a baby about a little music.” I begged his finest pardon and learned that he had been issued a summon for excessive noise.

It seems that someone else close by had enough of the music too and called the cops. I told him it wasn’t me but he stormed off.

It’s been quiet today but now I’m on edge and worried that he’s plotting some misguided revenge.”
