Anxiety has a way of writing entire conversations that never actually happened. This story is a pretty perfect example of that.
One renter set up her only available AC unit facing her neighbor’s deck, the only realistic option given her bedroom layout and inability to move furniture alone.
Since then, she’s somehow convinced herself the neighbor is secretly furious, built entire imagined conversations in her head, and started questioning her own sanity over sounds she may or may not have heard.
The big catch? Her neighbor hasn’t actually said a word to her about it.
Still, she’s spiraling over a problem that, so far, only exists inside her own head.
You’ll want to keep reading for this one.
My AC Unit
I’m panicking over my AC unit and my neighbors.
One renter sets the scene.
When I moved into this house, I put my bed in the largest front room. The only window to use my AC is front of the house.
If I put the AC in the other window, then the window over my bed would be open, and curtains too, all night. So, I put it in the front.
But this creates a problem.
My AC blows onto the apartment neighbor’s deck. It’s blowing to the side of their slider door.
With the heat, they may have their slider open in the evenings. The AC is also fairly loud. It’s hot, so it blasts cold air.
The renter worries that her neighbors are going to come after her for this.
I’m so paranoid they are upset about this. I swear I heard the guy who lives there talking about me.
I’m honestly so paranoid I don’t know if I’m hearing things or if he was really speaking about me!
Nobody has said anything, but I’m creating stories in my head, even with words being said, about this.
She begins to wonder if she’s thinking about this the wrong way.
Am I losing my mind? Should I go over and talk to them? Explain?
I’m worried I’m being a bad neighbor, but I can’t move into the back room without help. I can’t move my bed alone.
What should I do? Ignore it? Wait for them to say something?
Am I the NFH?
If anything, this renter is being too considerate.
What did Reddit think?
Conversations don’t necessarily have to be rude or confrontational.
This commenter names an instance where this renter would be the NFH.
In reality, the neighbor may not be paying near as much attention as she is.

It’s impossible to anticipate everyone’s needs.
The NFH subreddit is filled with stories of clueless, selfish neighbors who couldn’t care less about how their actions impact others. This renter is pretty much the exact opposite of that.
This story just goes to show how even an empathetic approach can get taken too far when a person lets their anxiety control their every move.
At the end of the day, being considerate doesn’t mean psychically anticipating every possible complaint before it happens.
