I got in today and, without much of an explanation, I got handed an envelope.

I was told it was a tracker I had to carry “at all times.”

I immediately went to my supervisor.

He said it was so the fire department can find us if we get trapped in our building during an emergency. He said that it shouldn’t track anything outside of work.

This employee informed her supervisor she wasn’t comfortable carrying a tracker with her.

I told him I was still uncomfortable with this. I would be leaving it in a work cubby.

He told me not to do this.

But I’m not going to carry a tracker with me. Especially not while I’m using the restroom. Or not even on the clock.

I’ve tried looking this up to see if maybe this is actually something companies do. I haven’t found anything online about it.

Now, she’s wondering if this was normal in other workplaces.

I don’t expect privacy at work when everything is tracked through the internet, phones, whatever.

But a literal GPS tracker is just insane.

Has anyone heard anything about this? I feel like I’m going crazy.

We didn’t even have a proper meeting about this either. The whole thing just seems so sketchy to me.

Honestly, the lack of communication is what makes this situation feel questionable.

A safety device might have a legitimate purpose.

But this should be clearly explained to the employees, including what it tracks, when it operates, and how their information is handled.
