Sometimes, keeping a promise isn’t as important as realizing when the situation has completely changed.
One husband found himself there after promising his pregnant wife that he’d bring her all the foods she had missed as soon as she gave birth.
But the delivery became much more serious than expected, and she ended up needing surgery.
While she was still recovering, he left the hospital to pick up the feast he had promised her. However, by the time he returned, she was awake and upset that nobody had been there when she came to.
She later told her mother what happened, and years later, his mother-in-law still thinks he made the wrong call.

AITAH for leaving my wife at the hospital to fulfill a promise to her
This happened years ago, but I’m still upset about it because my mother-in-law keeps bringing it up.
Long story short, my wife’s pregnancy was fraught with her craving things she couldn’t have.
So, she made me promise her to the high heavens that when she gave birth, immediately afterward, I would go and get her a feast of all the food she wanted and couldn’t have.
When his wife woke up, no one was there.
Well, the birth was very difficult, and she had to have surgery.
She was out for a while afterward, and I figured I should keep my promise and get her the food she asked for. However, when I returned with the food, she was awake, and she was upset that no one was there to greet her.
I explained I was keeping my promise, and she laughed it off, but when she told her mother, MIL got really mad and said I should have stayed with her and gotten the food after she woke up.
AITA?
Oh no! It always sucks when doing the right thing backfires like that.
Let’s check out what the folks over at Reddit think he should’ve done.
She was probably confused at first.
This reader thinks she should’ve waited.
That’s one way to shut her down.

This woman would’ve been happy to have the food.
His mother-in-law has a point.
After a difficult birth that ended in surgery, leaving while his wife was still unconscious probably wasn’t the best decision.
The food could’ve waited until she woke up and everything settled down.
So, even though he meant well, this was one of those times when the situation mattered more than the original plan.
