Not every neighborhood conflict starts with confrontation, sometimes it starts with a suspicious pile of empty peanut shells and a lot of second-guessing.

One homeowner had spent a season watching squirrels wreak havoc on her husband’s immaculately maintained backyard garden, assuming it was simply the cost of growing fresh vegetables.

The real explanation turned out to be much more direct: their elderly, well-meaning neighbor had been feeding the squirrels peanuts daily, scattering them right along the fence line closest to the garden.

That’s when she started weighing whether a polite conversation was reasonable or simply unnecessary conflict.

Just curious on outside opinions, as my husband and I encountered a squirrel/neighbor dilemma.

Quick background, we’ve lived in our home for just about three years. My husband loves to garden, so in our (fenced in) yard we’ve built a pretty decent garden.

Soon, this thriving garden began to attract some unwanted furry visitors.

With fresh veggies, we know there is an expected amount of squirrels and bunnies to be had, so no big deal, but my husband recently started finding empty peanut shells in our backyard after a particularly rough season of squirrels getting to his garden.

We just discovered today that our elderly neighbor has been feeding the squirrels nuts.

She really goes all out with these feedings, and it’s starting to create a problem.

She pours out a can of peanuts all over her yard, and specifically right on the back side of our fence that is closest to our side with the garden.

My initial thought is, we shouldn’t say anything, it’s unfortunate and maybe a little annoying, but it’s her yard, we can’t really ask her not to do whatever she wants.

On the other hand, she really doesn’t want to encourage this behavior.

But on the other hand, maybe politely asking the neighbor to not feed the squirrels is okay? I am aware how silly this is, curious on other people’s perspective.

Our neighbor is very friendly and we have a good relationship.

It’s harder to be direct when your neighbor is a genuinely nice person.
