Being dismissed during a medical emergency leaves a mark that doesn’t just disappear once someone finally pays attention.

One woman spent an afternoon telling her parents about chest pain, dizziness, and a heart rate racing to 180 while at rest, only to be told she was fine and left alone while they went to the bar.

What was supposed to be a thirty minute outing stretched into three hours with no contact, so she drove herself twenty miles to the emergency room instead of waiting any longer. She handled the entire ordeal without a single call to her parents.

But then came her mother’s visit two hours later, arriving at the ER as if nothing had happened. That’s when the daughter decided they were the last people she wanted to be around.

AITA for refusing to see my parents while in the hospital?

I, 31F, started having severe cardiac symptoms, including chest pain, dizziness, and left arm numbness, with frequent heart rate spikes to 180 while resting.

I live with my parents just to get back on my feet, because I couldn’t afford to live in my last location.

Instead of showing concern, her parents dismissed her symptoms.

I told my parents my symptoms, and they just said “you’re fine.” They then decided to go to the bar instead of checking if I’m okay.

4:30pm, they said they would be back in 30 minutes.

But they were gone way longer than that, so she had to take matters into her own hands.

Three hours later, at 7:30pm, they’re still not home, so I decided to drive myself to the hospital 20 miles away while refusing contact with my parents.

She didn’t forget how her parents treated her.

Two hours later, at 9:30pm, my mom tries to visit me in the ER, but I refused to let her see me due to not being there when I needed them most.

AITA for refusing my parents from seeing me in the hospital?

Sounds like her parents couldn’t have cared less about her in that moment.

What did Reddit have to say?

Her parents showed her true colors that day.

Feeling angry with her parents is completely understandable.

Her parents probably wouldn’t have been of sound enough mind to take care of her anyway.

Dismissing chest pain and a resting heart rate of 180 isn’t a small parenting misstep, it’s the kind of decision that could have had irreversible consequences.

Her parents chose a bar over checking on their daughter’s symptoms. That’s pretty inexcusable in many people’s book.

This woman showed her strength by handling this crisis all by herself, but even more painful was the realization that her parents didn’t care about her as much as they should.
