It’s bad enough to have neighbors from hell living next to you…

So imagine what it’s like to have folks next door who are terrible AND aren’t even legally supposed to be living there!

Yeah…that’s a lot…

In today’s story, a homeowner talks about why he’s pretty peeved with some folks who are squatting, yes, squatting, in the house next door.

The people “renovating” the rental property next door are clearly squatting, and the property manager/owner does not care.

“We live on a nice, quiet cul de sac with normal neighbors.

The exception is one property that is a rental.

It has been the problem child of our cul de sac for years, before I even moved in.

We’ve had normal people live there occasionally, but usually it’s seedy people moving in and harassing everyone.

This doesn’t sound good…

A few months ago, the most recent tenant moved out, and the owner decided to do some much needed renovations before renting it out again.

The people they’ve sent over here have been causing issues with us over the last couple of months.

The biggest one happened when I had tree services come out. My property is hard to access, and they needed to use the driveway of a vacant lot between me and this rental.

The owner of the vacant lot has an old broken down work van parked in the driveway, and I have a good relationship with him so I reached out to ask if we could move it to the curb temporarily so they can set up the crane, and he was fine with this.

I had a tow truck come out and move it to the curb in front of his property, not in any way in front of the rental.

What the…?

One morning, a couple days after the tree service but before I could move the van back, I see someone loading the van on the back of a tow truck.

I come out and stop them and ask what they’re doing.

They show me a Facebook post of someone supposedly “doing renovations on this house” selling the van for $500. In his post he blatantly lies and says “this has been parked in my yard for OVER A YEAR and I need it gone.”

He really shouldn’t have done that!

First off, he doesn’t own the house, he was just some random flooring subcontractor.

Second, it’s not in front of the house, it’s in front of the property of the van owner.

Third, it’s been parked there for a week, not over a year. The poor guy picking it up already paid him the $500.

The van owner showed up after I called him and we got screenshots of the post and the profile.

This is very strange…

I reached out to the property owner and he claims he has no idea who the guy is. Doesn’t seem to really care that someone working on his property just committed a crime.

Since then, I’ve noticed a truck that seems to be constantly parked out front of the house, day and night. Who I assume is the main contractor doing the renovations has been at this house day and night for over two weeks now. His wife (I assume) and child have also shown up and are constantly hanging around.

They are clearly living in this house, unless they’re just the hardest workers of all time and have to live in the house they’re renovating. But they don’t really seem to be getting much done.

They’ve also recently had some dog tied up to a trash can in front of the house and leaving him out there all day.

It just keeps getting worse…

It’s been 90+ degree days with index over 100 for the past few weeks, and constant rain showers and thunderstorms coming through, and they’ve left this poor dog do deal with it.

I also told the property manager about this, and threatened to call animal control to take him away, as you cannot legally have an animal tied up without shelter in harsh conditions where I live, it’s illegal.

Again, he doesn’t care.

All he’s told me so far is “no one should be living there right now” yet it’s becoming more and more apparent that they do.

The neighbor is concerned finds the squatters concerning too.

My neighbor, who lives right next to the rental, called me the other night saying the “wife” was wandering in circles in the cul de sac pushing a stroller for like 5-6 hours, again on a very hot day. Then she came to my neighbors property and kept moving her trash can in front of her driveway for some reason.

She caught her doing it and asked what she was doing, and she just got ignored.

Then the woman was later standing in front of my neighbors house taking pictures of the house and just creeping around. At one point she was throwing stuff into my neighbor’s yard.

My neighbor threatened to call the police if she didn’t leave her alone.

She reached out to the property manager, who said, and I quote, “Yeah, I think she’s a little touched.”

This is a really bizarre situation.

AGAIN, doesn’t care that the people he’s supposedly hired to clean out this house are not only living there, but are now just harassing people in the cul de sac and are apparently mentally unwell.

My neighbor has a better vantage point of the cul de sac than I do, and has said multiple nights they will have random people coming around in the middle of the night, headlights shining into her windows, blaring music, being disruptive, getting in shouting matches, etc. clearly not something you’d do if you’re “renovating a house”.

Thankfully we are tucked away down the hill from the cul de sac and somewhat insulated from these things, but my poor neighbor has to deal with the brunt of it.

It could’ve been really bad!

There are other things they have done, such as burning brush in the backyard (while we are under a burn ban) and two days after I had to call the fire department as a log rekindled back there while no one was there, and could have potentially spread to the entire forest behind our house, which would have been disastrous for probably 100+ homes in the area.

I just happened to see smoke filling the cul de sac when I got home from work, and noticed no one parked out front, and knew they were burning stuff before, and put 2 and 2 together.

This was at the beginning of the renovations, before these people supposedly started squatting.

He’s had just about enough of this.

Is there truly anything I can do here?

If they’re gonna squat, I truly don’t care as long as they mind their business. But if they’re going to be negligently letting fires burn unattended, attempting to sell other people’s property, harassing me and/or my neighbors, and bringing disruptive people around at all hours of the night, I’m not putting up with it.

What blows my mind is that the manager HIRED these people to work on the house and is seemingly just enabling them to have free rein.

This is pretty crazy.

He does realize he’s losing money right? Not only is he paying them to do nothing, but every extra day they stay is another day until he can rent it out again.

I get it’s tough to deal with but.. dude, you hired them.

This whole thing is just so screwed up and I’m losing sleep over it.
