“No Good Deed”: How a Simple Exchange of Favors Sparked Outrage in One Neighborhood

Most people do kindnesses for their neighbors just because it is the right thing to do, but it doesn’t always work out perfectly.

What would you do if you had helped one neighbor by making food for her, but after she expressed her thanks to you by giving you a free manicure & pedicure, another neighbor entirely got upset that you didn’t pay for it?

That is what happened to the woman in this story, so she blocked the ‘Karen’ and refused to speak with her going forward.

Some people are just miserable and can’t mind their own business. Read through the full story and see if you think this lady handled herself well.

A Never Wronged Karen 🙄

I ,34F, live in a neighborhood that has a Facebook group with most neighbors. We share kid’s toys, old clothes, old furniture and so on.

It is very generous to make food for a neighbor.

One day, this random neighbor (let’s call her Karen 60F), posted on facebook group that her friend (that is also our neighbor) needed a meal train because of a unforeseen circumstance.

I love cooking and baking so I responded to her post saying I would love to help. Long story short I sent them a few dinner and baked goods. No big deal there. I had fun cooking and baking and someone’s family got to eat.

This is very nice of her.

After a little bit, her friend (let’s call her Ana 35F) mentioned that she wanted to thank me by giving me a nail service (she’s a manicurist). I said thanks and took it.

Once I arrived at Ana’s place, she asked if I wanted to do pedicure as well. I told her that if she had the time I would love that (fully knew that I wanted to give her a big tip).

She just wanted to say thank you.

So, she gave me a manicure and a quick pedicure since she said she already had dinner plan with Karen. I said it was completely fine.

When I was done, I asked Ana if I could venmo/zelle her at least a tip for what she’s given me and that I was happy with the result.

There was nothing more she could offer, really.

She said no need and that she wanted to thank me for all the trays I was sending for her family. I asked Ana one more time to give me her Venmo/Zelle and she still refused.

I even mentioned to her that I would be more than happy to send me more baked goods or dinner if she ever needs them again. I basically mentioned everything to express my gratitude.

I sent those dinner trays and baked goods not expecting anything in return. I was happy someone could benefit from my cooking.

This is really none of Karen’s business.

Fast forward few minutes later when I got back to my car, I got a text from Karen saying that I took advantage of Ana and I should have paid for the service, especially because I also got a pedicure. The deal was only a manicure. I was stunned. Somehow Karen really pressed my button with that statement.

I already begged Ana to let me pay or at least give a tip. She refused, twice. I offered cake, she refused saying she’s fine, and there was Karen accusing me without knowing anything.

What is her problem?

The only thing Ana mentioned to Karen was she would be a little bit late to dinner because she just finished giving me a pedicure.

I told Karen that I offered to pay twice and then offered some cakes and Ana refused. All Karen said was “I do not want Ana to be taken advantage of”.

Some people really can’t admit when they are wrong.

It really got me mad because not only she was accusing me, but after she knew the entire story, she refused to apologize! I got mad and I said “usually after wrongly accusing someone, people tend to apologize.”

And she said “this is fine. I just said I didn’t want Ana to be taken advantage of”.

The drama is starting to spread, though.

I do not think that’s the point anymore. I feel like Karen was accusing me for something I didn’t do and refusing to apologize to me. I blocked her number and was done with her since I knew this was going nowhere. I am not dealing with her ever again.

I did mention this to Ana to let her know what her friend told me. Ana said that Karen has been doing this Karen thing for years and that I shouldn’t take it personally.

Letting people get away with things just because they are kind-hearted isn’t the right thing to do.

Karen could be rude but deep down she has a kind heart.

(This is something that my chinese background tends to say. The elder could do no wrong and us the younger generations have to accept that rude behavior. I expect this behavior from my parents and family because it’s harder to avoid them but didn’t expect this from a random neighbor).

There is no reason to keep in contact with Karen.

Ana is so sweet and patient but man I would not hang out with anyone remotely close to Karen again.

Honestly, this whole thing was none of Karen’s business. Why does she feel the need to get involved?

Why can’t some people just mind their own business? This lady handled the situation perfectly.

There is no reason to get involved in a back-and-forth argument with a neighbor like this.
