Well, this is a weird one!

We see a lot of strange stories here, but this one is just…odd.

But, as we like to say, you never really know what you’re gonna get when it comes to neighbors.

It could be good, bad, or ugly!

Bizarre encounter.

“The neighbour that’s behind my house (our backyards face each other) has been out of the country for 6 weeks now.

The husband speaks no English (after 20 years of being here), so I chat with his wife. She’s very nice and we look out for each other. She called to tell me they were going away, to which I replied “I’ll keep an eye on your place”.

It’s been hot and we’re under water restrictions that say no use of irrigation systems but hand watering is fine. I was noticing their plants and shrubs wilting and not looking too good. I went into their backyard yesterday and watered their roses, clematis, hostas etc.

Huh?

As I was moving the hose to water their front plants the neighbour beside them came and asked what I was doing. I don’t know him past a hello, but for 10 years I’ve been buying the neighbourhood kids Christmas presents, and he always gives me a great bottle of wine.

I said that their plants are dying and needed watering.

His face went dead white and he became visibly uncomfortable. He said that some water was dripping from the connection and I said that all hoses do that.

What was this all about?

He tried tightening it with a wrench, but it didn’t budge. He came out on the front lawn and watched me as I watered. When I turned the corner he backed off but would send his 5 year old every 2 minutes to see if I was still there.

Twice he turned the spigot wheel down 50% until I told him that I need it open fully or it would take me twice as long to water. I was getting irritated but held my tongue.

As I finishing watering he came out to ask me if I was done. I asked him why do you care so much that I’m watering their plants so they don’t die.

He said he’s not bothered at all. To which I replied, you are visibly shaken that I’m doing this, and I can’t figure out why.

This guy sounds like a control freak.

He said that Charles (the husband) told him they were going away and could he watch over things while they are gone. That means that I am responsible for their hose and water. You being here doesn’t fit with him asking me to watch over things.

I told him that Cathy called to say they were going away, and that I said sure thing, I’ll keep an eye out. He asked me if she specifically ask me to water things. I said no, but keeping an eye out for things would encompass this.

He claimed that because Charles asked him, the house is his responsibility. I replied that you should have been watering then. He didn’t tell me to water things. This went back and forth for a while.

Weird!

I finally said that his thinking was absolutely bizarre as I’m saving their garden and I had nothing more to say about it.

As I began to move the hose reel in the backyard, he told me he would do it as he is responsible for the hose.”
