Family members should respect rules and boundaries in someone else’s house.

In this story, a woman collects toys, Lego sets, and other collectible figures in a room in her house.

When her family came to visit, she decided to lock the room and told her nephew they could look at it together after dinner.

Her brother, the boy’s father, took offense at this and accused her of not trusting his son.

Yikes! It sounds like he completely misread the situation. Read the full story below to find out more.

AITA for locking my nephew out of my room with collectibles inside?

I live alone. Two weeks ago, my family came over for dinner.

Including my parents, my brother, his wife, and their son, who’s 11.

I have a separate room where I keep my Lego sets, Funko figures, and a couple of other collectibles.

To some people, it’s just plastic. But some of these items are expensive.

Some are even already discontinued. I’ve been collecting them for years.

This woman told her nephew he could look at her collection after dinner.

My nephew caught a glimpse of the room out of the corner.

He asked if he could take a look. I said yes, but only with me after dinner.

The reason is simple. He’s not very careful. He does not listen to what adults say.

Even though I had explicitly ordered him not to, he had previously opened one of my Funko boxes at my house.

My brother said at the time that he didn’t know any better and was simply interested.

The boy saw that she locked the room.

So, I locked the room and went back to the table. I think my nephew saw that.

He got quieter, but he didn’t say anything. After dinner, I took him to the room myself.

I showed him figures in my collection.

I also gave him a brand new Funko figure that I had just purchased.

I hadn’t had a chance to store it yet. I believed that everything was well.

Her brother made a big deal out of it.

But the next day, my brother called and made a huge scene.

He said that I had embarrassed his son by closing the door.

That I didn’t trust a youngster who was almost grown up.

He said that I was more concerned about plastic than the boy’s mental health.

Now, she’s being accused of treating her nephew like a criminal.

I told him I didn’t forbid him from seeing it.

I just wanted to be there because these are my things in my house.

We had unpleasant precedence in the past.

Now, my brother says I turned an ordinary kid into a criminal.

Our relations are a bit tense. AITA?

Seriously? No one’s thinking that the boy was a criminal.

OP was simply setting boundaries and enforcing some house rules, especially since there was an incident in the past.

I think her brother overreacted dramatically. Honestly, giving her nephew a figure afterward showed she wasn’t being mean at all.

Locking your room doesn’t mean you are a villain. It means you are the owner.
