She Moved to a Small Town for Peace—Then Her Nosy Neighbors Started Tracking Her Every Move

Moving to a small town comes with charm, community, and apparently a whole lot of unsolicited opinions about your daily schedule.

One woman relocated a few hours from her old home for her husband’s job, taking her time job hunting while substitute teaching and working toward updating her teaching certification.

Her landlord, living right next door, started texting to ask what she was up to and eventually called her husband at work to question why her car was parked at home so often.

Then came the grocery store run-ins from her nosy neighbors asking why she wasn’t at a job, while standing in the same aisle at eight in the morning themselves.

That’s when she realized privacy might be the one thing this town doesn’t offer.

Neighbors in my business ALWAYS

Husband and I moved to a new town for his work, about 3 hours away from our old place.

Renting a nice townhouse in a quiet neighborhood. I’m still looking for a job, but taking my time as it’s not a huge rush. I leave the house every day either to take my husband lunch or run errands.

Soon the landlord starts meddling.

Landlord (who lives in the townhouse adjacent to us) has texted me about “what am I up to,” basically. She called my husband AT WORK to ask HIM if I was working or if something was wrong with my car because “it’s here a lot of the time.”

Other neighbors too.

People around town and church (we all live in the same two neighborhoods) have stopped me in the grocery store asking “what are you doing? Why aren’t you at work?” when THEY are ALSO IN THE STORE AT 8 AM ON A TUESDAY!

She finds ways to keep herself busy, so why do they care so much?

I’m substitute teaching part-time while I look for a steady gig, and I’m taking classes at night at the local CC to update my teaching cert, but WHY do I have to explain that to anyone?

I’m going berserk. I get asked about working/having a job/what I’m doing with my time EVERY DAY!

Can’t a girl read a book on her porch? My husband pays the bills!

Everyone needs to mind their own dang business.

What did Reddit think?

This user shares a helpful trick.

Simply ignoring them could go a long way.

Why not return the same energy?

These people deserve to be called out.

There’s a difference between being friendly and being nosy, and this town seems to have completely lost track of where that line is.

This woman doesn’t owe anyone, her landlord included, a play by play of her job search, her class schedule, or how she spends her afternoons.

The grocery store interrogations are almost funny in how self-unaware they are. Why is she there? Well, she could ask her neighbors the very same question.

Some people have nothing better to do than meddle in someone else’s life.
