She Was Tired of Paying for Her Parents’ Dog—So She Told Them She’s Deducting the Expenses from Her Rent

Folks, you’re about to be thrust into the middle of a family drama that will make you shake your head and roll your eyes…

Because these people sound crazy!

And the worst part is that there is a poor, suffering dog in the midst of all this chaos.

Check out what this woman had to say about why she’s giving her parents an ultimatum.

AITA for telling my parents that if I have to continue paying their vet bills, I’m taking it out of the rent?

“I (26F) live with my parents and brother (23M) in a family home.

My parents couldn’t afford the bills on their own, so my brother and I stay to help out. We both pay $800 rent per month, and between that and what the parental units bring in, we manage okay for the most part.

My mom is disabled, and has a service animal. Sweetest dog ever, and I love her.

Yikes…

But this dog has a tendency to grow fatty lumps (not cancer), and then chew them. Without going into detail, this has had some not so good consequences, which has led to some red liquid being spilled.

There has been one spot on her side that has been an issue for a few months now. I’ve been pressing this whole time for something to be done. I was worried that she would get an infection, if not from her own efforts, then from the attentions of our dachshund, who also likes to worry at this spot.

I suggested making the dog wear a cone until the spot healed. That was “too cruel, to make her wear it long term like that”.

Why aren’t they taking the dog to the vet…?

I bought bandages, gauze, and ointment. These were applied for less than a week before it was deemed “too much hassle, she keeps taking it off when we aren’t looking” (which was whenever the dog left the computer room/office, which neither parent leaves voluntarily except for bodily needs).

I even went out and bought 3 special recovery suits so that we could bandage the dog and keep the open spot covered so that she couldn’t mess with it.

It was apparently bandaged once underneath, and when the dog was once again allowed to rub herself on (read: slam into and scrape her side against) the furniture and move it out of place, was never done again.

This poor dog…

Yesterday, I noticed that there was a smell following the dog, and when I brought it to my mom’s attention, found out that she had gotten an infection.

My mom, who has recently been purchasing multiple things in order to “make the front yard look nicer”, declared that we don’t have the money to take the dog to the vet, so we’ll have to try and clear this up at home.

In the meantime, they finally agreed to make the dog wear a cone full time. She applied triple antibiotic ointment to the surface, and called it good.

These people just don’t get it…

This morning, I woke up to find that they had taken the cone off to allow the dog to go outside, not bothered to watch her, and let her open up the spot again, which meant that there were some decently sized red spots on the floor and the dogs side.

Fed up, I informed my parents that I was going to start calling veterinarians tomorrow, and if her side wasn’t cleared up by the middle of July, that I was taking her in, regardless of who’s dog it was and even if I had to do it on payments.

I also told them that after this, if they ever let it get this bad again, the money to pay the vet was being taken out of what I pay for rent. They snapped back that I pay to live there, and it wasn’t my dog, so I needed to mind my own business.

AITA?”

That poor dog!

Stuck in the middle of all this nonsense…

She either needs to re-home the dog or take it with her when she moves out.

There’s a whole lot of craziness going on inside this house…
