AITA for refusing to pretend nothing happened after I was publicly blamed?

“I’m part of a small group that works together on volunteer projects every few weeks. We usually divide responsibilities, and everyone knows what they’re supposed to do.

At the last event, one person forgot to bring a key item they had specifically volunteered to handle.

We couldn’t start on time, and everyone was frustrated.

Instead of admitting they forgot, they immediately told the group it was my fault because I never reminded them.

What?!?!

I was caught completely off guard.

I hadn’t agreed to remind anyone, and they’re an adult who had chosen that responsibility themselves.

I calmly said that wasn’t what happened and explained that everyone was responsible for their own tasks. I didn’t raise my voice or argue beyond that.

The awkward part was that nobody really said anything. A few people just changed the subject, and we eventually worked around the problem.

This is ridiculous…

Later that evening, the same person messaged me saying I embarrassed them in front of everyone and that I should have backed up their version of events in public, then corrected them privately afterward.

They said friends are supposed to protect each other instead of making them look bad.

I told them I wasn’t trying to embarrass anyone, but I also wasn’t willing to accept blame for something I didn’t do just to avoid an uncomfortable moment.

The coworker didn’t like that.

Since then, things have been a bit tense.

A couple of mutual friends think I should have let it go in the moment because it would have kept the peace, while others say I had every right to correct the accusation immediately.

Now I’m wondering if I handled it badly.

I don’t like public confrontations, but I also don’t think staying quiet while someone blames me is the right thing to do.
