Imagine getting married and starting a new job with a schedule that’s pretty much the opposite of your spouse’s schedule. You leave for work shortly before she gets home from work. How would you make time for each other?

In this story, one woman complains about her new husband’s job. He leaves for work shortly before she gets home and doesn’t get home until the early morning hours. But that’s not even the biggest problem.

What she’s really upset about is how much overtime he works. She feels like she never sees him anymore. Sometimes literal days pass and they’re not even home at the same time at all.

She’s not sure if she’s overreacting or if this really is a problem.

Keep reading for all the details.

AIO: My husband (26M) working overtime and I (25F) don’t like his work-life balance

My husband started a new job in September, after not working for 7 months since he was studying for the MCAT.

This job is very much temporary, according to him, as he has a former coworker who is starting his own research lab and wants to hire him to manage it, which would start in January.

This new job, to me, sucks.

His schedule doesn’t really mesh with her schedule.

His hours are 2 – 10:30 and it’s a small drug test laboratory and their machines break all of the time.

Because of this, he often stays late to rerun tests or fix the machines so they can work again. So it’s not uncommon for him to come home at 1, 2, or 3 in the morning.

They also offer overtime hours occasionally on the weekends which he takes.

I work 7 am – 3 pm, Monday through Friday, so I want to use our weekends to spend time together.

He sounds like a bit of a workaholic.

His previous job before he took time off, he was notoriously bad about work-life balance. He would go in early and stay late.

At the time, we were still only dating and he lived with his parents, who also got on him for his work-life balance.

Currently, it’s 8:13 pm on a Saturday night. I haven’t seen him since Wednesday. I have his location and I know where he is, and I trust him, so I don’t have to worry about cheating, but he’s working overtime now.

He called me at 6 and said it shouldn’t be too much longer. He then called me at 8 and said it should be another 20 minutes.

It’s not that she doesn’t want him to work, but she misses her husband.

I don’t want this to sound like I’m against him working or making money.

We have some serious payments for different things coming up soon, so we need the money, but I’m just frustrated because we recently got married and I feel like I’m getting no time with him. He’s letting work take over, again.

I’ve already tried to tell him this before and he just brushes it off, saying “I know, I’ll work on it” or “I’ll try to finish up early”, but it never happens.

She sounds very frustrated.

I got kind of upset with him on the phone but now I’m worried I’m overreacting about it.

I only have to deal with this job, supposedly, for about 3 more weeks, but I don’t know if I can make it that long without blowing up on him.

So, am I overreacting?

If it really is only another three weeks, I think she needs to stick it out. However, this isn’t the first time her husband has worked lots of overtime, so even with a different job, he’ll probably do it again. He’s probably passionate about his work, which isn’t a bad thing, but he’s married and needs to make his wife a priority.

Let’s see what Reddit has to say.

This person thinks she’s overreacting.

But this person thinks her husband sounds like a workaholic.

Another person thinks she’s kind of overreacting but also understands why her husband is working so much.

This is a good point, but depending on her job, she may not be able to switch her hours.

It would be hard to be newlyweds and go literal days without even seeing your spouse at all. At least she knows he’s working and not cheating on her, but still.

It’s too bad their schedules don’t mesh at all, but hopefully the job with his friend will actually happen. Hopefully then his hours will be closer to hers. Then, even if he does work overtime, at least they’d be home at the same time more often.

He’s definitely a workaholic, but that’s not always a bad thing. At least he enjoys his job and is making good money.
