An Employee Recognized Her Own Fake Customer-Service Laugh — Coming From A Customer

There’s a very specific sound retail workers develop after enough repetition: the forced laugh that comes out whenever a customer cracks the same joke for the thousandth time.
One employee found herself unexpectedly on the receiving end of that exact reaction during a shift at self-checkout, after asking an older customer buying alcohol if he had ID once the age verification prompt appeared.
His response was a chuckle that was polite, practiced, and clearly delivered out of courtesy rather than genuine amusement.
Instead of feeling embarrassed, she found herself respecting the effort.

I got given the ‘retail laugh’ by a customer.
So, if you work in retail, you’ll know what I mean by the ‘retail laugh’. S
uch as, when an item doesn’t scan, and you hear the “That must mean it’s free!” joke for the millionth time, and you give a forced little “…Haha….”, complete with the ol’ ‘retail smile’.
But on this particular shift, the roles were reversed.
Well, I was on the other end of it today. I was manning the self checkouts, and a much older gent was buying some alcohol.
The ‘age check’ popped up, and I went to clear it. As I did, I playfully asked him if he had ID, and I got the “…haha…” complete with the retail smile too.
And you know what, fair play to the man!
Suddenly, the employee had a realization.
Maybe he had heard that one more often than he cared to think about, just like the ‘Must be free’ joke, but he wasn’t rude, he was polite enough to humour me during our brief interaction.
It just felt sort of odd, realising I was on the receiving end of the ‘retail laugh’ for once.
Also, for clarity, just before people comment about it, I do know it’s not ‘strictly’ a retail thing, pretending to laugh at someone else’s jokes.
Oh, the irony. At least the guy was good-humored about it.

Sometimes you just have to catch the customer off guard.

Not all retail jokes are created equal.

There’s something almost humbling about recognizing your own go-to coping mechanism reflected right back at you by a total stranger.
This employee has probably delivered that same hollow “haha” a thousand times to customers cracking the “must be free” joke, so realizing an older man was doing the exact same polite performance was quite an interesting experience.
After all, it’s small pleasantries like this that keep society running.
