This employee found himself in an interesting conversation with his manager about going out for drinks after work. His manager was wondering why some employees do not like to go drinking with him. So he asked the same thing to his manager to prove a point.

My manager complained that young employees never went drinking with him

This happened at workplace of mine in Japan.

Back then, going out for drinks with coworkers after work was still a pretty common part of office culture, especially when a manager invited younger employees.

One day, my manager complained:

“Young employees these days never come drinking with me.”

This employee made his coworker realize something.

So I said, “Then why don’t you go drinking with your own manager?”

He immediately replied, “Because drinking with my boss isn’t fun!”

I just looked at him and thought…

Exactly.

Workplace traditions may be common, but that doesn’t necessarily mean everyone enjoys taking part in them. OP was very smart to ask his manager why he wouldn’t go out with his managers, too. And that made him realize the simple answer the manager was wondering about.
