Sometimes, you try to do something nice and end up wishing you hadn’t.
For one employee who’d just moved to town, it started when he asked his manager to recommend a tax accountant.
He took her advice and ended up with a much bigger refund than usual.
So, to thank her for the recommendation, he gave her a gift card, and she seemed happy with it.
But a few days later, her husband came into work to confront him, and suddenly that gift became a problem.
Read on to see how the situation unfolded.
AITA by trying to be nice to a manager that hates me
A manager who I thought I was just friends with at work thought I was trying to advance on her by making small talk when I was just asking for life advice.
I moved into a new town, asking all the managers here, not just her, for advice. I talked to literally every manager, asking for advice, not just her.
I happened to ask her one day for a tax place in town because I needed to get my taxes done. She told me about her tax accountant, and I went to her.
When he got his refund, he tried to do something nice for the lady.
A week later, I got my refund, which happened to be about $1,300, and I thought, “Holy ****, normally all I ever get is $200 at the most. This is awesome.”
I asked the tax accountant, “How can I repay my manager for recommending the accountant?” and the accountant suggested I give her a gift card.
So I give her a gift card. She starts crying at work, saying, “Thank you. This just made my day a whole lot better,” and then I went back home.
A couple of days later, she starts saying I’m starting to stink despite constantly taking showers and wearing deodorant. She’s saying I’m starting to stink.
Then, her husband showed up.
Her husband then comes to our workplace, calls me up to the front, then starts saying, “So I hear you’ve been hitting on my wife.”
I told him that’s not the person I am and that I just gave her the gift card because I was thankful for the huge tax refund and wanted to give her a thank-you present. Which I would have done for anyone regardless.
He then hands me a stick of deodorant and says, “You stink. People can smell you up here,” just overall being rude and unprofessional. I apologize to him, and he leaves.
Long story short, I’m done with trying to be nice. Seems like it always bites me in the ***. Can’t be nice anymore without having someone think you’re hitting on them.
AITA?
Oh my! It sounds like he has more than one problem here.
Let’s check out what the people over at Reddit have to say about it.
This is so true!
That’s a great way to look at it.
Exactly! That’s a great analogy.
If you enjoyed this story, check out this post about an employee who was denied a raise for “not being dedicated enough,” but then went on to discover what was really going on behind the scenes.
According to this person, he did nothing wrong.
This whole thing went way too far!
For starters, her husband had no business coming into work to embarrass him like that.
If she thought he was hitting on her, that’s something that should’ve been discussed with HR or management.
Regardless of what happened here, he doesn’t need to stop being nice. But he should keep things strictly about work at all times.
