Trust between family members tends to run on an honor system, which tends to go south quite quickly when you’re dealing with an untrustworthy or opportunistic person.

A young man agreed to lend his stepsister close to $96 USD when she was dealing with an emergency. He gave her what he thought was a fair deadline, but after it came and went, things started to go south fast.

After weeks of repayment, he caught her hanging out with friends, spending money like there was no tomorrow.

So when he questioned why she refused to repay him, it ignited a family debate that left him on the losing side.

I’m a 20-year-old guy, and my stepsister is 19. We get along pretty well, but we’re not exactly best friends.

Last month, she asked me to lend her about $100 because she said she was short on money and needed it for something important.

So against his better judgment, he complied, but soon came to regret it.

I had some savings, so I agreed, but I told her I needed it back by the end of the month.

The deadline came and she didn’t pay me. I asked her about it, and she said she’d had some unexpected expenses and needed another two weeks. I agreed.

But even after this generous extension, she still seemed to have no interest in repaying the money.

Two weeks later, I found out she’d spent a bunch of money going out with her friends. I confronted her and asked why she couldn’t pay me back if she had money to go out.

That’s when she decided to play the “but we’re family” card.

She got really upset and said I was treating her like a stranger instead of family.

I told her being family doesn’t mean I can’t expect her to keep her promises.

Then came the crocodile tears.

She started crying and said she’d been having a really difficult time lately and that I was making everything worse.

I felt terrible, so I told her she didn’t have to pay me immediately. I just wanted her to be honest with me.

Now the rest of the family is starting to turn against him.

Now my mom says I shouldn’t have brought up the money at all because my stepsister is struggling. But honestly, I worked for that money, and I only lent it to her because I trusted her.

I don’t want this to damage our relationship, but I also don’t think I was wrong for asking for it back.
