People should be mindful of the words they use around others.

In this story, a teenager became upset after his mother’s friend openly bragged about using a racial slur around him.

He had already dealt with racism throughout his life and felt especially uncomfortable hearing her talk about saying it casually.

He stayed quiet at the time to avoid creating problems, but later realized he wanted to snap back and say something to her.

Check out the full details below.

AITAH for wanting to tell of my mom’s friend

I have a roommate that I have to live with, and she owns the house.

We aren’t friends, and she is my mom’s friend.

I am 17, and she is mid-30s, maybe early 30s.

This teenage boy heard her mom’s friend saying the N-word.

A couple months ago, her, my mom, and me are all in the kitchen.

My mom is talking about a person she once knew, and I talk about how I had to stop him from saying the n word.

I am black and have dealt with racism all my life, being in a state with very low diversity, at least in the areas I was at.

I don’t live near the cities.

My mom’s friend then chimes in and starts pretty much flexing about how she always says the n word.

She says that if I’m in the car with her, I’ll hear it all the time.

He got mad and wanted to snap back, but he controlled himself.

I got annoyed and really wanted to yell.

But I composed myself and just let it go, as I didn’t want to cause problems.

Months later, I tell my mom I don’t like her. I tell her why.

Now, we are getting kicked out.

It is for a fair reason, as we haven’t been able to pay rent.

We are stuck in a crappy loop of bad luck and not having the money to pay for things.

But we can’t go get jobs, as we have no way of getting there and no money to use to be able to.

Now that they’re getting kicked out, he wants to say something to her.

I didn’t want to say anything in case we might get kicked out.

But now that we are anyway, I wanna say something about it.

My mom’s friend is a blonde white woman who for sure knows not to say it.

So I feel like I shouldn’t have to say anything in the first place.

He’s wondering if it would be wrong to say something.

I know I have every right to feel this way.

But I don’t know if I should say anything, as she also has younger kids that she could be teaching that it’s okay to say it.

AITA? Also, I am a guy and am mixed, too.

But it’s really obvious I am black, as I have an Afro and other features black people have.

It is understandable that OP felt upset when he heard her mom’s friend’s racist comments.

Being the older woman, she should know better than to use that word around him.

It sounds like he is more mature than she is, as he showed restraint by not starting an argument at the time.
