A nanny can do a lot to help keep a home running smoothly, but they can’t be responsible for every little problem that comes up.

What would you do if you had asked your nanny to keep an eye on your girlfriend’s car in the driveway, but then it got stolen, so you blamed her and fired her?

That is what happened to the woman in this story, but now her daughter is upset that the nanny got fired.

Personally, I think the nanny did nothing wrong, and this lady is a bit crazy. Read through the full story to see what you think.

AITA for firing my daughter’s nanny for not watching my girlfriend’s car?

Quick backstory: I am 40F and have a 7 year old daughter.

Let’s see what is happening.

My husband died a year ago, and our marriage had been headed for divorce because I was attracted to women.

I began dating again at the end of 2019 and my girlfriend, 21, moved in at the start of July.

The nanny does seem a bit unprofessional.

I knew right away my girlfriend didn’t like the nanny. The nanny only treats my girlfriend with the necessary politeness instead of the warmth that she shows towards my daughter.

My daughter makes her disdain for my girlfriend clear, and I feel that her nanny encourages it. For example, when my girlfriend tries to make conversation and she’s not responding, her nanny will put her arm around my daughter and divert her attention to something else, like by pointing out something on her iPad.

This must have been awful.

The final straw was what happened yesterday morning. My girlfriend wakes me up because she’s crying. Turns out that the car I had bought her for her birthday in June was gone from the driveway.

Luckily, after calling authorities and because Range Rover has a good and secure tracking system, we were able to track the car and the police said they could handle it from there.

Do they expect the nanny to search the car every time the girlfriend comes home?

My girlfriend got into an argument with the nanny because an unwritten part of her job descriptions was to make sure the house and the things belonging to it’s residents are secured.

My girlfriend regularly parks outside the garage and tends to forget to take her car keys inside, leaving them instead in the car. And when she first moved in she asked that the nanny keep an eye on her car.

This is really asking too much of the nanny.

And I had also asked that she occasionally check to see if my girlfriend’s keys were in her car and to put them in the kitchen cabinet if she did see them inside the car.

The nanny defends herself by saying that she shouldn’t keep her keys in the car no matter where she lived, and that she assumed that the car was in the garage when she got here. And that my daughter was monopolizing her attention.

Cleaning up toys and stopping grand theft auto are two very different things.

I get angry because the nanny was sitting down for breakfast with my daughter before me and my girlfriend woke up and when my daughter leaves her stuff out anywhere, she always puts things safely back inside. None of my daughter’s things have ever been lost under her watch.

Yet when my girlfriend asks for her to watch her one possession, it ends up gone. I was mad that the nanny was blaming my girlfriend for what should have been her job, so I ended up firing her.

You have to feel bad for the daughter.

Now my daughter is angry and saying that I took away her best friend and that she hates my girlfriend.

I get why my daughter’s angry, but I don’t see why I’m the bad guy for firing an employee who wasn’t doing her job correctly and was making someone I love upset.

AITA?

Yeah, she is way out of line for so many reasons. Most specifically, however, is expecting a nanny to prevent a car from being stolen.
