A missing paycheck has a way of clarifying exactly how much a job actually respects you.

One nonprofit employee had heard the warnings before ever taking this job. This particular workplace was known for treating any criticism, internal or otherwise, as somehow prejudiced.

So when her boss brought up former employees who’d left over unpaid wages and gone on to file formal complaints, she flatly refused to weigh in.

Days later, her own final paycheck went unprocessed.

Between an existing pattern of withheld pay, her boss’s growing paranoia, and school starting back up soon, she’d already been planning her exit. But she couldn’t get over her boss’s audacity to still expect her to show up for work the next day anyway, without pay.

Welp. My pay got withheld.

I work for a nonprofit. And I knew better, I had been warned against this place by multiple people. They present themselves as Black-run for the Black community, and any criticism against them they claim is prejudice. (FYI, I am Black.)

The writing had been on the wall for a while.

Some people who used to work there got their pay withheld over the summer and quit.

They recently filed an L&I complaint, and it looks like they warned other organizations about the nonprofit and maybe illegal things they had been doing.

My boss mentioned them at an all-hands meeting, and I made it clear I would not be discussing them or anything to do with them to my boss.

That’s when the employee noticed something extremely upsetting.

Aaaaaaand she never entered my payroll info for my last check.

I was already planning on quitting due to her history of withholding pay and her general paranoia and school starting again for me soon, which would take multiple posts to get into.

It was the company’s audacity that bothered her the most.

What I can’t quite wrap my head around, though, was she still seemingly expected me to come into work today 😂😭.

I’m not too worried about being called prejudice because this isn’t my career anyways, I only started working there because she asked 🤷🏽.

I can risk getting cancelled in this sphere, because we’re not in the same lane, I’m not even on the same highway as her.

But really? Expecting me to come in and work????? Hahahahaha

Companies shouldn’t be allowed to behave this way.

If you can’t pay the people working for you, then you really don’t have much of a business.

The whole point of a job is to make a living, not play some big elaborate game of who will accept the most mistreatment for the least amount of money.

Expecting someone to keep working without getting paid reveals exactly how little accountability exists once the mission statement stops mattering.

Nobody should have to prove their worth by tolerating unpaid labor just to keep a job that never intended to value them anyway.
