Sometimes, difficult family decisions become necessary when finances take a serious turn.

In this story, a man had to ask his uncle to leave an apartment he had lived in rent-free for 20 years.

His retired parents had lost access to their savings, leaving them with only about six months of cash.

After giving his uncle several weeks to move out, he found that nothing had changed… so he had to do something to force him out.

AITA for kicking my uncle out of his house?

My mom (55F) bought a spare apartment in our city almost 30 years ago.

20 years ago, my uncle (57M) couldn’t find a job.

So my mom offered him to stay in the apartment as long as he’d like, rent-free.

My parents had all their money in a local bank that went under this year.

It would take 3 years for them to get it all back.

This man informed his uncle that he had to move out.

My parents only had around 6 months of cash left, and they are retired.

My mom couldn’t get herself to do it, so I told my uncle he had to move out as we had to sell the house.

I (22M) gave him 3 months’ time and explained the situation.

After 3 months, on the date we agreed on, I found out he didn’t move and stopped responding to my texts.

I gave him another 2 weeks, then proceeded to change the locks of the house and ship all of his belongings to my grandma’s house.

His uncle was forced to work as a dishwasher.

My uncle had to get a job as a dishwasher to pay rent.

After I sold the house, my parents are financially stable and will end up getting all the money back.

But my uncle’s family doesn’t have a place to live anymore.

AITA?

This sounds like a tough situation to be in. Honestly, it’s sad to hear what happened.

Nobody wanted the uncle out, but the circumstances had clearly changed. OP gave him extra time after the original deadline.

So it is understandable that he eventually took action when his uncle stopped responding.

Indeed, right?

Twenty years rent-free was a pretty good lease, but apparently, it’s not an unlimited subscription.
