Imagine living in a neighborhood where there is just enough street parking for every homeowner to park one car on the street. While street parking is technically public parking and fair game for everyone, would you abide by the unwritten one car per house rule in your neighborhood, or would you park as many cars as you want on the street?

In this story, one homeowner explains that everyone in the neighborhood only parks one car on the street, every homeowner that is except for one annoying neighbor.

This really bothers them.

Unfair Road Parking

There is some road parking outside our house.

There are just enough spaces for each of the houses to have one car parked on the road.

Each of the houses also have a driveway. That can fit 2-3 cars. But it’s awkward, and most people like to park one car on the drive and the second on the road.

It’s an unsaid rule, but yeah we have that common understanding – except my neighbours.

How annoying!

They choose to park both of their cars outside on the road, taking up one of my spaces (not my space, anyone can use it, but it’s opposite my house). Leaving their driveway completely empty.

They stand in the window looking, as soon as I move my car from that space, they will move their car into it.

Sometimes they’ll only have one car at home, so they will move the car from their space into mine, other times they double park and block both of the spaces.

Not sure, what would others do in this scenario? Talking to them is not an option – we’ve tried and it didn’t work.

Why don’t they just park one car in the driveway? I don’t understand this thinking!

Now, this would be illegal.

Since it’s street parking, there’s really no way to prevent the neighbor from parking both cars there. The idea to park in someone else’s unofficial spot might work by disrupting the entire balance of the neighborhood parking situation.

I don’t understand why someone would choose to park on the street when they have a perfectly good driveway. Not only is parking in the driveway the considerate thing to do, it’s more convenient for the person driving the car.

Driveways exist for a reason! Use them!
