Living below someone with a low noise tolerance is one thing, living below someone willing to call the police over a video game is a whole different problem.
Two roommates who’d just moved into their building found themselves dealing with an increasingly hostile neighbor, starting with a reasonable late-night noise complaint and quickly escalating into unexplained ceiling banging with zero communication.
Things reached a breaking point when police showed up at 12:30am responding to a reported domestic violence call describing banging, crashing, and screaming, despite the tenants only playing Fortnite at a low volume while finishing up a puzzle.
What made it worse was learning the same unit had received an identical complaint months before they’d even moved in.
Some neighbors escalate quietly, and some skip straight to the dramatic.

downstairs neighbours called the police on us
So me and my friend just moved into this building 2 weeks ago.
The first time, the renter totally understood.
First night, I was building my bed frame making a bit of noise a bit after 11pm, so we got a knock on the door from the guy saying his son is disabled and sick and to be quiet.
Very reasonable, as it was past 11pm.
Then the neighbor started to get more curt about it.
A week later, my roommate is building a nightstand at 6:30pm and this man starts banging on the roof. No knock on the door or anything.
Even quiet activities like puzzling were somehow inexcusable for this neighbor.
On Friday, me and my few friends were doing a puzzle.
Moving the chairs around a bit to work around the puzzle. 8:30pm, he starts banging on the roof, again. No knock on the door for the rest of the night, no signs that we were being noisy.
But one night everything escalated.
Later in the night we are playing Fortnite with the volume at maybe 8, and still continuing the puzzle and giggling a bit. 12:30am, we get a bang on the door and it’s the police. They say they received a call for domestic violence, hearing “banging, crashing, and screaming.”
The renters defend themselves to the cops, but there seems to be a bit of a mix-up.
They are confused when they walk in. They tell us what we’re doing is very reasonable, but they also got a similar call to this unit back in September.
We didn’t live here in September. So I’m assuming this man has done this before.
Now the neighbor is being openly hostile towards them.
Also, the next day when we were going down the stairs through the back door (fire escape), he opens his door and just watches us.
The renters aren’t sure how to proceed, so they get management involved.
I can understand that you don’t want noise, but you do live in an apartment with multiple other people so you should expect some. We also let the building manager know and she said she has received no complaints, or she would’ve texted us herself.
They think this has all been a massive overreaction.
I would prefer some communication rather than banging on the roof and calling the police for domestic violence. I just wanted to share this because it’s really getting on our nerves!!!
Calling the cops seems to be a step too far.

This neighbor was clearly making excuses.
This neighbor should have known the noise was simply from a video game.

That first noise complaint was reasonable, but everything that followed wasn’t.
Ceiling banging with zero conversation, followed by a fake domestic violence call over a low-key game night is just someone escalating on purpose.
It’s unclear what this neighbor’s actual motives were, but in all likelihood, they weren’t good.
