Most workplace perks come with strings attached, but this one revealed its strings almost immediately.
One employee watched their company convert an empty office into a cozy wellness room, complete with a couch, dim lighting, and an email praising the importance of stepping away to prevent burnout.
After one particularly rough customer call, the employee actually used it, sitting there for about ten minutes before heading back to work feeling steadier.
The next day, they received a tense reminder from leadership that using the room required clocking out entirely, effectively neutralizing any real benefit the perk was supposed to provide.
What looked like a thoughtful benefit turned into another example of good intentions buried under fine print.
You’ll want to keep reading — this one’s pretty unbelievable.
Management opened a wellness room for stressed employees and then told us we have to clock out if we actually use it
My company recently turned an empty office into a little “wellness room.”
In theory, this looked like a great idea.
Couch, dim lights, some plants, whole email about how they care about burnout and want people to take a few minutes when needed.
But in practice, it was a whole different story.
I actually tried it once after a pretty stressful customer call. Sat in there for maybe 10 minutes, got myself together and went back to work.
That’s when toxic leadership chimed in.
Next day, our manager reminded everyone that the room is for personal use, so technically we should clock out if we’re going to sit in there.
The employee could hardly believe what they were hearing.
So they created a room specifically for dealing with stress caused by the job, but apparently dealing with that stress happens on your own time.
Suddenly the whole thing started to feel like a total rip-off.
I swear every new “benefit” here somehow comes with a catch.
Haven’t used the room since.
How tone deaf can company leadership be?
What did Reddit have to say?
For some companies, there’s no limit to how far they’ll go to screw over their employees.
Any leader with a shred of self-awareness would recognize how insane this is.
It’s time to dust off the ol’ handbook.

This could be a violation of labor standards.
The whole point of a wellness room is treating stress that the job itself created, so requiring people to clock out to use it kind of defeats the entire purpose.
That stress didn’t originate on personal time, it originated during a shift, on a call, in the middle of doing exactly what the company asked.
This whole ordeal is like the corporate equivalent of handing someone a fire extinguisher and then charging them after the fact.
Here’s hoping that karma catches up to this nonsense employer sooner than later.
