Free childcare should come with gratitude, not a rulebook not everyone signed off on.

One woman offered to babysit her niece and nephew for an entire weekend so her brother and his wife could get away to Nashville, only for a disagreement over a grounding rule to spiral into a much bigger fight.

She pushed back on being expected to enforce a no-video-game punishment while managing two young kids solo, arguing that discipline decisions belonged to the parents, not the babysitting aunt.

Her brother didn’t take that well, accusing her of being untrustworthy with his children if she couldn’t follow his exact boundaries.

That’s how a scheduling favor turned into a rare and painful clash in an otherwise close family.

AITAH? Fight with brother over babysitting for my niece and nephew

I (F35) agreed to babysit for my niece and nephew (5M and 3F) so my brother and his wife could go to Nashville this weekend. I am babysitting them at my mother’s home, she’ll be home but working some of the time.

From the start, her brother hinted this wouldn’t be a walk in the park.

My brother told me that my nephew is grounded from playing video games this weekend, and that he might throw a fit, etc.

I half-jokingly commented that I’m not dealing with tantrums and that they can’t just ground him and leave me to deal with it while they go on vacation.

She’s made it clear she’s not there to be a third parent.

I don’t let the kids do whatever they want, but if I’m the one primarily watching them, they have to just let me do it, and they can discipline them and be precise about parenting styles on their own time.

Plus, I’m their aunt, not their parent, and the kids are always happy and most of all completely safe with me.

That’s when her brother decided to go off on her.

It escalated to a big argument where my brother told me that if I can’t respect their boundaries, I cannot be trusted with their children.

This was pretty rich considering her brother’s history.

This was particularly hurtful because my brother is in the military, and at various times, has relied on me and our mom for support, especially during times where he has been away and my SIL has needed family and emotional support and help with the kids.

My brother was deployed all of last year, and I really stepped up and was a support person for his family. I have taken off work and given up weekends to spend time with them, visit, etc.

That’s when she lost her cool as well.

I’m not proud of this, but I was getting a little emotional and heated and snapped that if he doesn’t trust me after everything at this point, and if he feels the need to be that micromanaging, he should stop asking me to babysit his kids for free.

So AITA? We’re usually a close family, and this kind of fighting is unusual.

Sounds like emotions got the best of her family.

What did Reddit have to say?

Next time, it’s worth approaching this differently.

If the kids are such a handful right now, maybe it’s not the right time to go on a vacation.

Her brother is being just plain hypocritical.

It’s time to start being more assertive with family.

Being asked to babysit for free already implies a level of trust, so escalating a disagreement into “I can’t trust you with my kids” feels like a pretty big leap.

She wasn’t rejecting her brother’s authority; she was asking for reasonable flexibility while managing two kids on her own.

Years of family trust shouldn’t evaporate over one disagreement about video games.
