She Loves Her Job, But Her Boss’s Complete Inability To Plan Ahead Is Stressing Her Out

Imagine landing a job you really like. You like the actual job and the paycheck.

The only problem is that you don’t get paid consistently since the boss often claims to be short on cash. And then there’s an issue with scheduling. The coworkers aren’t the best. Your health is suffering, and well, you have to ask yourself, do you really love this job?

In this story, one woman is in this exact situation, and she claims she doesn’t plan to quit. Maybe she should change her mind.

Keep reading to see if you agree.

AIO about how my boss runs his business?

I was one of the first employees at the business and over time became reliable enough to become manager.

I got a raise and to be honest the job is something I enjoy and my boss is usually pretty flexible with the schedule which is great.

Onto the issue(s)

Here’s the first problem, and it’s a big one.

Our ordering system is just bad, we run out of stuff a lot and I can tell it ticks a lot of our customers off.

We had some regulars that I haven’t seen since our most recent inventory drought.

I do not order products but order other things for the shop when asked. And to be honest, a few times our orders were lost or forgotten so I dont put that on my boss.

But I’m starting to see a pattern.

The boss seems to have his priorities out of order.

Meanwhile, my boss is buying other things for the business like signage, lighting, shelving.

Which… I get but also know it’s not a priority if we dont have the proper inventory stock.

Then my boss complains about being strapped for cash, usually around the time he needs to pay us.

Payroll is another big issue.

Onto my main concerns: this week is the second time he’s stalled payroll.

He does eventually pay, but sometimes in installments rather than the lump sum we’re supposed to get.

Then shows me everything he’s buying…. and it’s starting to tick me off because how can you show me this and simultaneously tell me you have to push payroll back?

I told him this cannot keep happening, but he’s certain that we just need to get over the hump.

This sounds really frustrating.

When he gets strapped for cash and pushes off payroll, he tells me he can’t have me on as much because he wants to make sure he can pay for the hours I’ve worked already.

Cool, concerning, but ok.

But then calls me into work anyway and I end up having a rather chaotic week that I can’t plan ahead for, since I won’t know what I’m working until the night before sometimes.

Now he’s stalled payroll again and isn’t cutting my hours when I’m experiencing the busiest week of my life (he knows) and also due to my declining health I’m considering calling out.

It gets even more annoying.

On top of that, after delaying payroll the fist time he said I could pick any hours I wanted.

So I did, and he sent me a completely different schedual than what I requested.

And when I asked why one of the days that I usually work anyway I suddenly wasn’t working, he admitted to giving that day to another coworker…. after telling me I had priority.

And guess which coworker flaked on that day… which resulted in his asking me the night before if I could cover.

Obviously, I said no.

The coworkers aren’t the best either.

There’s other stuff going on with other coworkers. Where me and my boss both know they’re shady and unreliable, don’t do the tasks we ask them to, meaning I have to do the bulk of it and redo everything after not being in for a few days.

But I can tell he’s not giving me priority over them despite that I’m the only one maintaining any semblance of organization.

To be honest, most of the time I love the job. It’s the best I’ve been paid and my boss is usually pretty easy going but knows when to give proper direction.

I dont plan on quitting.

She needs to prioritize her health.

I just haven’t felt well due to having so much stress inside and outside of work and nothing has gone right the last two weeks.

The disorganization at work has made it so much worse and every hour I’m thrown some type of curve ball that makes me down and out and I’m at my whits end.

I feel like this is turning into me being that overly reliable worker that does the most but is often overlooked because “she’ll make it happen” and because I work hard the expectations of my patience and hard work go up.

I kind of have to call out, due to my health but also because I dont feel comfortable taking on so much when he’s admitting that he can’t pay me on time and buying all this stuff that, honestly, can be put off until we make a bit more money.

She has bills to pay!

Like I need to pay rent and I need to be able to know when I’m going to have that money.

To be honest, the pay date has never been entirely clear either.

I’m a planner, like two weeks to a month ahead if I can. And I haven’t been able to plan really anything. Everything has been played by ear.

Like I said when something comes up my boss is flexible which I super appreciate. But I operate in foresight, not hindsight or split second decision I know in the moment.

She seems to have trouble prioritizing herself.

I just know I have to look out for myself right now.

It’s hard, being a people pleaser who hates being seen as a slacker.

But I haven’t had real down time in over a week, no plans all last minute decisions, and constant stress and anxiety about what my week will look like, if ill get paid, not to mentiom other stressers in my life rn.

I have a compromised immune system and although I’ve said this I dont think my boss gets what that’s means. I’ve already ran myself into the ground for other jobs and I refuse to do that again. These shifts are loooong.

She feels insecure.

My main insecurities are that one: he already gave me a raise, and although I do the majority I haven’t actually started doing any of the admin stuff yet.

And two: this week was awful to figure out mainly because im dealing with some really chaotic stuff that has nothing to do with work. And my boss was really understanding and flexible when I changed my schedule three times in two hours.

So AIO about how my boss handles things and should I call out until he figures it out?

I do not see myself getting fired, I am too reliable and my other co workers…. are not.

That sounds like an awfully conflicted thought process about her job. She claims to love it but also finds her boss’s lack of planning and failure to pay on time very stressful.

Let’s see how Reddit responded.

This person would quit.

Another person thinks she should’ve quit.

This person thinks the business won’t last.

One person shares a similar situation her friend was in.

This doesn’t sound like an amazing job or an amazing company. The boss is unreliable. She’s basically the only one holding everything together.

If she doesn’t want to go down with a sinking ship, she needs to jump ship before it’s too late.

Time to dust off the resume!
