Woman Stopped Drinking So She Could Watch Her Roommate, But Eventually Even She Couldn’t Handle Her Behavior

When you are young and first getting drunk, you are in quite a vulnerable position. You don’t know your limits yet, and that can cause you to get drunker than you might have realised – and that drunkenness can lead to you behaving in ways that you wouldn’t usually behave, thanks to lowered inhibitions, higher confidence, and a greater willingness to take risks. It can actually be dangerous, especially if you are around the wrong people.

By the time you’re grown, most folk have usually figured out their limits and tend not to go past them. It’s a way of keeping ourselves safe, whilst still having a good time. But there are also plenty of people who continuously push those limits, enjoying the lack of inhibitions they feel when very drunk, and not bothering so much about the consequences. And while this can be fun at times, such behaviour can feel quite burdensome for those around you, who cut their own enjoyment short to look after you. And that’s exactly the position that the woman in this story regularly finds herself in around her roommate.

Read on to find out what eventually became the final straw.

AITA for letting my roommate make a fool of herself?

I (25, female) have a roommate, Jill (27, female) who I generally get along with.

The problem is when she drinks too much she likes to play matchmaker.

I have been the victim of this several times which leads to some awkward conversations of me informing people that I am in an eight year long relationship and do not plan to be leaving any time soon.

Let’s see how Jill’s matchmaking got her into trouble.

This past weekend we went to a graduation party for a friend. We were drinking and having fun when I noticed Jill drink an excessive amount. I slowed down since I knew I’d have to take care of her.

Around 11pm she decides she going to try and get two of our friends together. After I told her no and to stay out of it she asked why.

I reminded her of what she did to me and that Gladys, one of the friends, just had a messy divorce from her abusive husband and to leave it alone. Jill did not listen and told me she never tried to set me up with anyone.

In that moment I remembered all the anger I felt every time she tried to set me up and I told her to do whatever.

Read on to find out what happened next.

Jill started in and I watched. After about an hour Gladys blew up and left. So did we.

Jill was so drunk she was slumped over in the car the whole four hour ride home (we had a designated driver). Then didn’t remember anything.

Videos of her at the party surfaced on social media and she got mad at me. She screamed that I am her babysitter when she drinks that much and I should have watched her better.

I don’t feel bad and I’m moving in with my boyfriend now since my things have come up broken or missing.

AITA?

There is no way that this roommate is in the wrong here.

She tried to warn Jill and take care of her, but there is only so much you can do since another grown woman has their own autonomy.

Really, this kind of drama is something she must be happy to be getting away from.

Let’s see what folks on Reddit made of this.

This person agreed that as a roommate, she had no obligation to be Jill’s babysitter.

While others thought that Jill can only blame herself for her behaviour.

It’s completely irresponsible of Jill to act this way, knowing that she has a history of upsetting people when she’s drunk, and then try to blame other people for her actions. Because she needs to learn some impulse control and not get so drunk that she blacks out and humiliates herself and puts her friends in awkward positions – or if she can’t do that, she needs to be getting herself some treatment or therapy instead. Because honestly, this kind of friend is not someone that anyone really wants to be around, and if she doesn’t change her behaviour she’s going to end up finding herself alone.

And it’s about time that this woman moves out of her place with Jill and in with her boyfriend, especially if she’s beginning to find her possessions broken or going missing too. It seems like Jill’s behaviour is deteriorating, to the point that she’s no longer a safe person to live or hang out with, especially given the way she verbally attacked her roommate when she found out about her own drunken behaviour. Because it’s not her roommate’s fault – she only has herself to blame.
