She Was Sick of Cleaning Up After Her Lazy Roommate—So She Stopped Covering for Her Entirely

You really never know what you’re going to get into when you get a new roommate.
You can hope for the best, prepare for the worst…and pray that it all works out.
The woman who wrote the story below has just about had it with her new roommate, but she’s not sure how to proceed in dealing with this person.
Ugh…this doesn’t sound good…
Let’s take a look at what she’s dealing with.
My STRANGE new roommate.
“I’m currently in a pickle with my new strange roommate and wanted to hear some respectful advice. I also wanted to share a crazy story.
I’m 23F and live with two roommates: Mei (21F) and Jen (25F). Mei’s parents own the house and let me rent a room. Mei and I get along well because we’re both clean and respectful of our shared spaces.
When Mei left for summer break, Jen moved in. I only got about a week’s notice, but I didn’t mind. Anyways, I welcomed her, labeled the kitchen cabinets, and assumed she’d already been told the house rules (e.g., clean up your mess, lock the doors, no boys overnight).
Jen wasn’t following the rules…
Within a few days, Jen started leaving dirty dishes, pans, and oil splatters all over the kitchen.
I cleaned up after her only ONE TIME to be nice, but it quickly became a pattern.
I try not to be nit-picky because I know she just moved in, so I left a friendly reminder on our whiteboard to wash her dishes, put things back where they came from, tie trash bags tightly (to avoid flies and maggots), but nothing changed…
How gross!
When I left for a two-week trip. When I came back, the house was A MESS—dirty dishes everywhere, oil splatters, an unorganized fridge, untied trash bags, and a clogged dishwasher that she never mentioned.
I go ahead and make Mei aware of everything since her mom owns the house.
I feel like telling them did not change much since they aren’t actively at the house, so I’m stuck dealing with this by myself until August.
These people sound crazy…
When I asked about it, Jen blamed her 45M boyfriend because he was also at the house.
He came over to try to fix the dishwasher, but while that was happening, he told me all about their relationship problems. Mind you, I did not ask for the lore and told him I don’t want to get involved in their problems because I barely know them both.
The entire time, I thought they were both a mess. A man-child who cannot find a woman his age and a grown woman who cannot clean up after herself.
Later that night, they had a screaming match for nearly two hours. He even started vomiting from stress.
This is insane!
She did not bother leaving her room despite his constant vomiting episodes. After he left, she didn’t even check if the doors were locked, so I went down to check to make sure.
The next morning, she tells me she hopes I wasn’t scared by the fighting.
I tell her in a stern but respectful tone that every relationship has its ups and downs, but they’re both adults and need to communicate calmly because this is a shared space.
A bad rainstorm hits our city, and our trash cans are gone. I tell her I will call the city to get new ones when I’m back in town.
Okay, this has to stop…
Next weekend, I come home to untied trash bags outside in the rain (bugs all over it), the same mess, and her boyfriend had stayed over all weekend.
Normally, I wouldn’t care, but the fact that the kitchen is a mess AGAIN, and I was originally told this was a girls-only house where overnight male guests weren’t allowed.
Apparently, the landlord approved it, which I found pretty hypocritical.
This sounds awful.
It’s just very strange to me that two grown adults cannot clean up their mess and waits til I get home for them to clean it up.
All of this happened within THREE WEEKS of her moving in.
She’s already mentioned wanting to live with me again in the future, but after everything that’s happened, I have ZERO interest.
