She Paid Real Money to Apply for an Apartment—But the Landlord Kept It Even After Renting to Someone Else

Do you think that property management companies have gotten a little bit unreasonable with all the application fees?
I sure do!
It seems pretty unfair to charge people a bunch of money and then turn right around and reject them as a tenant.
That’s what the woman in this story is dealing with, and she’s had just about enough of it.

“Me and my husband are looking for an apartment, and we applied to one place.
We each had to pay $50 fee right off the bat, so $100 total.
Then we get a rejection stating that we are denied because their policy is to “accept the first qualified applicant”.
This is sketchy stuff…
If your policy is basically “first come, first serve” contingent on candidates being able to pass a background check/make enough money, it seems extremely scummy that you continue to rake in fees from other applicants before even looking at the applicants you already have.
I feel like a background should be the LAST step of the process.
Have me fill out all of my information, and only have me pay a fee for a background check once you’ve determined that I’d be a suitable candidate based on the information I provided, and that the others who came first are not suitable.
Times are tough out there…
I’m just so frustrated because you get screwed and gouged for every penny you have every step of the way.
Can’t afford a house, so forced to rent from greedy corporate overlords who are causing rent prices to soar, nickel and dime you on your security deposit, provide subpar maintenance, etc.
There should be some sort of consumer protection for this. I know there is some places but not where we applied.
It’s insane.”
