One favor can gradually turn into a full-time job if nobody ever draws the line.

One friend started out simply reminding a flighty friend with a history of forgetting things about a single important commitment.

That single ask somehow morphed into a recurring pattern, with every forgettable obligation somehow becoming her responsibility to track.

Eventually, one specific task came up that the friend explicitly said they’d handle themselves.

She let it go, they forgot, and instead of owning the mistake, they turned around and blamed her for staying quiet.

You’ll want to keep reading for this one.

AITA for refusing to remind someone about something they already agreed to?

My friend asked me to remind them about an important commitment they had made. I did, because I didn’t want them to forget.

A few days later, they asked me to remind them again. I did.

This has become a troubling pattern in their friendship, so one day, she decided to do a little experiment.

Whenever they had something they didn’t want to forget, I was apparently supposed to keep track of it for them.

Last week, I decided not to remind them about something they’d specifically told me they would handle themselves.

This didn’t turn out well at all, so she used it as an excuse to finally stand her ground.

They forgot, missed it, and blamed me for “knowing they would forget and not saying anything.”

I told them I wasn’t their personal reminder system, and that remembering their own commitments was their responsibility.

Now the two friends aren’t on the same page at all.

They think I was being petty because it would have taken me five seconds to send a message.

AITA for deciding that I’m not going to keep reminding someone about commitments they made themselves?

This friend really needs to start learning to be more independent.

Redditors chime in with their thoughts.

In an age of so much technology, there’s really no excuse for forgetting things this much.

This friend needs to put the learned helplessness aside.

“Personal Assistant” is a job this person never signed up for.

Explicitly saying “I’ll handle this myself” and then blaming someone else for not stepping in anyway is a pretty egregious example of how lazy this friend has become at keeping track of their own life.

It was never this woman’s job to play personal secretary to this friend, and the sooner she sets the record straight, the better both of them will be for it.

One reminder out of kindness doesn’t come with a lifetime subscription attached.
